Historical background
The North American P-51 Mustang was an American single-seat fighter aircraft developed during the Second World War. Although early versions used an Allison engine, the Mustang became especially well known after later variants were fitted with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, giving the aircraft excellent high-altitude performance and the range needed for long escort missions over Europe.
Its combination of speed, range and manoeuvrability made the P-51 a highly effective escort fighter and air-superiority aircraft. It helped protect bomber formations by accompanying them deep into enemy territory, while also carrying out fighter-bomber and ground-attack duties when required. The aircraft continued to serve after 1945, including during the Korean War, and remains one of the most celebrated American fighters of the piston-engine era.
